Grâce à une voix naturelle remarquable, à quelques rencontres inattendues et une somme de travail colossale, fruit d’une volonté à toute épreuve, il a interprété au cours de sa longue carrière plus de cent rôles. Il s’est produit notamment aux côtés de Maria Callas, Montserrat Caballé, Plácido Domingo, Jane Rhodes, Marilyn Horne et Joan Sutherland, sous la direction de chefs prestigieux tels que Georges Prêtre, Colin Davis, Manuel Rosenthal, Carlo Maria Giulini ou John Eliot Gardiner. Pensionnaire à l’Opéra de Paris, il a également mené une carrière internationale, se produisant dans les plus grandes salles : Carnegie Hall à New York, Bolchoï à Moscou, Covent Garden à Londres, la Scala à Milan, Teatro Colón à Buenos Aires, etc…

 Il est devenu une référence pour les générations de barytons qui lui ont succédé, tant par la qualité de sa diction que de ses interprétations.
